- During the American Revolutionary War, Hessian mercenaries capture Fort Washington from the Patriots.
1821 - Missouri trader William Becknell takes a trail that would later become known as the Santa Fe Trail and arrives in
Santa Fe , New Mexico.
1863 - In Battle of Campbell's Station near Knoxville , Tennessee , during the American Civil War, Confederate troops attack
Union forces, but are unsuccessful.
1907 - Oklahoma , consisting of Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory is admitted to the union, becoming the 46th state of
the United States.
1914 - The U.S. Federal Reserve Bank officially begins operating.
1943 - A German-controlled hydro-electric power facility and heavy water factory in Vemork , Norway is struck by American
