- Noah Webster publishes the first edition of American Dictionary of the English Language.
1860 - The first Pony Express rider arrives in San Francisco, California with mail originating from St. Joseph, Missouri.
1865 - The 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln is shot in the back of the head by in Ford's Theatre by a .44 caliber
Derringer used by John Wilkes Booth.  Lincoln would die the following day.
1902 - James Cash (J.C.) Penney opens up his first retail store, the Golden Rule Store, in Kemmerer, Wyoming.
1910 - President William Howard Taft throws out a ceremonial first pitch, starting the tradition in America.
