- A group of golfers gather at the Taplow Club in New York City to lay out plans for the PGA.
1917 - The United States purchases the Virgin Islands from Denmark for $25 million.
1949 - The first American sitcom, "The Goldbergs" first aired on CBS.
1950 - Eleven men steal more than $2 million from the Brinks Armored Car depot in Boston, Massachusetts.
1961 - President Dwight Eisenhower delivers a farewell address to the nation and warns against the "military-industrial
complex".
1969 - The Beatles release the album Yellow Submarine to compliment the movie.  It was one of the few Beatles albums to
not reach the top spot on the charts.
1971 - The Baltimore Colts defeat the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V, held at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida.
1982 - The day became known as "Cold Sunday" as air swept down from Canada giving may places in the United States
record low temperatures, including -52° in Tower, MN, -27° in  Chicago, IL, and -2° in Birmingham, AL.
1994 - 67 people are killed as a 6.7 magnitude earthquake strikes Southern California.
1995 - A magnitude 6.8 earthquake hits near Kobe, Japan, causing over $100 billion in damage and killing 6,434 people.
2002 - Mount Nyiragongo erupts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo killing 45 people and displacing 400,000.
