- The University of Notre Dame receives its charter from the Indiana legislature.
1870 - A political cartoon for the first time symbolizes the U.S. Democratic Party with a donkey ("A Live Jackass Kicking a
Dead Lion" by Thomas Nast for
Harper's Weekly).
1892 - The rules of basketball are first published by James Naismith in Springfield, MA.
1919 - The Boston Molasses Disaster occurs as 21 are killed and 150 injured when a wave of molasses rushes through the
streets.
1943 - Covering 34 acres with 17 miles of corridors, the Pentagon building is dedicated.
1967 - The first Super Bowl is held.  At the site of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California, the Green
Bay Packers defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10.
1974 - Happy Days premieres on ABC television.
1978 - The Dallas Cowboys defeat the Denver Broncos by a score of 27-10 in Super Bowl XII.
2006 - NASA's Stardust spacecraft becomes the first to return to Earth with a sample of cosmic dust.
2009 - US Airways Flight 1549, flown by Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger successfully makes an emergency landing in
the Hudson River in New York.   All 155 occupants survive.
