Clarke, author, inventor (2001: A Space Odyssey) Events 1687 - Explorer Robert Cavelier de La Salle is killed by his own men while on a quest to locate the mouth of the Mississippi River. 1863 - The SS Georgiana, a major Confederate cruiser, is destroyed with the cargo onboard valued at over $1,000,000. The wreck is discovered by pioneer underwater archaeologist E. Lee Spence exactly 102 years later. 1865 - The Battle of Bentonville takes place during the American Civil War which saw the Confederate forces withdraw from Four Oaks, North Carolina two days later. 1915 - The first photograph of Pluto is taken. 1916 - Eight United States planes take off from Columbus, New Mexico, in pursuit of Pancho Villa, in the first United States air-combat mission. 1918 - Time zones and daylight savings time is established by the U.S. Congress. 1920 - The U.S. Senate rejects the Treaty of Versailles for the second time, the first occurring on November 19th, 1919. 1931 - Nevada legalizes gambling in the state. 1945 - Off the coast of Japan during World War II, a dive bomber hits the aircraft carrier USS Franklin, killing 724 of her crew. Although the carrier is severely damaged, it is able to return to the United States under her own power. 1945 - Adolf Hitler issues his "Nero Decree" towards the end of WWII, ordering the destruction all industries, military installations, shops, transportation facilities and communications facilities in Germany . The orders are not carried through. 1957 - Elvis Presley puts a $1,000 down payment on Graceland. 1962 - Bob Dylan releases his self-titled debut album. 1979 - The U.S. House of Representatives begin broadcasting its daily business on the C-SPAN network. 1987 - Jerry Falwell assumes control of the PTL Club after televangelist Jim Bakker resigns over a sex scandal. 1995 - Michael Jordan comes out of retirement from the NBA and scored 19 points in a game versus the Indiana Pacers. The bulls would go on to achieve a second 3-peat. 2002 - Operation Anaconda ends in the Afghanistan/U.S. War after an estimated 500 Taliban and al Qaeda fighters are killed, along with 11 allied troop fatalities. 2003 - President George W. Bush addresses the nation to announce that Operation Iraqi Freedom has begun. 2004 - The United Nations launch a political corruption investigation into its Iraqi Oil for Food program. 2008 - A cosmic burst, named GRB 080319B, that is the farthest object visible to the naked eye was viewable for a short period. The blast occurred approximately 7.5 billion years ago, and it took that length of time reach us. |
