Births 1852 - Calamity Jane, frontierswoman, professional scout 1910 - Cliff Battles, Hall of Fame running back 1925 - Chuck Bednarik, Hall of Fame linebacker, center 1930 - Ollie Matson, Hall of Fame running back Deaths Events 1778 - The Battle of Crooked Billet commences in Hatboro, Pennsylvania during the American Revolution. 1785 - The king of Hawaii, Kamehameha, defeats Kalanikupule and the Kingdom of Hawaii is established. 1834 - Slavery is abolished by the British colonies. 1848 - At Jefferson College located at Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta is founded. 1863 - The start of the Battle of Chancellorsville takes place during the American Civil War. 1886 - Eventually commemorated as May Day or Labor Day in many industrialized countries, the Haymarket riots at Haymarket Square in Chicago, Illinois begin the general labor strike which eventually ends with workers achieving an eight-hour workday in the United States. 1893 - The World's Columbian Exposition opens in Chicago, Illinois. 1898 - In the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War, the Spanish Pacific fleet is destroyed by the U.S. Navy. 1900 - 200 are killed in Scofield, Utah during a mining disaster in what is one of the worst mining accidents in U.S. history. 1901 - The Pan-American Exposition opens in Buffalo, New York. 1915 - The RMS Lusitania departs from New York City on what will be her final crossing of the North Atlantic. Less than a week later, RMS Lusitania is torpedoed near the coast of Ireland. 1927 - The American Federation of Labor Union founds the Labor Life Insurance Company. 1930 - Pluto, a dwarf planet orbiting the sun, is officially given its name. 1931 - The Empire State Building is dedicated in New York, New York. 1950 - Guam, an island in the western Pacific Ocean , is organized as a U.S commonwealth. 1956 - Developed by Jonas Salk, the polio vaccine becomes available for the public. 1971 - Amtrak is formed in the United States to take over the passenger rail service. 1989 - MGM Studios opens at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. 2003 - United States President George W. Bush, in what is known as his "Mission Accomplished" speech, declares that "major combat operations in Iraq have ended" on board the USS Abraham Lincoln off the coast of California. America has suffered over 4,000 casualties since that date. |
