Who’s Up for a Toga Party? The Story Behind the Cult Classic ‘Animal House’

John Belushi Would Have Been 70

Fun Fact: John Belushi wanted to be a bigger part of the film, requesting that his character Bluto go with the others on the road trip. But John Landis refused, saying that Belushi’s character was best used sparingly. Another fun fact: That bottle of whiskey that Bluto chugged was actually iced tea. This was part of the plan to keep John Belushi away from drugs and alcohol. That, aside from the staying in a house away from the rest of the cast.

On March 5, 1982, when he arrived for a scheduled workout, Belushi’s trainer Bill Wallace found him dead at the Chateau Marmont Hotel on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. Sadly, Belushi was just 33 years old. The cause of death was combined drug intoxication involving cocaine and heroin. In the early morning on the day of his death, he was visited separately by Robin Williams and Robert De Niro.
