1984 was the year this film came out, and while it is supposed to be based on Burroughs’ original novel, this adaptation never even uses the name Tarzan for its main character, which was played by Christopher Lambert who was popular from his Highlander and Mortal Kombat roles. Jane was played by also popular actress Andie MacDowell.

Actor Ralph Richardson earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his final film appearance as Tarzan’s grandfather. This film made history as it was the first Tarzan film to ever receive an Academy Award nomination. Aside from its acting, the film was also recognized for its screenplay and makeup effects.
