The Men Behind Tarzan: The Real-Life Jungle Man and the Troubled Author Who Brought Him to Life

Two years later, ‘Tarzan and His Mate’ came out in 1934. It’s the first sequel with Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan, and it was directed by Oscar-winning art director Cedric Gibbons. But for some reason, it didn’t do so well at the Box Office. Who knows, maybe it’s because it was too soon after the last film.

But the film has endured over the decades since its release, and many now consider it to be even better than its predecessor. In fact, in 2003, ‘Tarzan and His Mate’ was selected by the United States Library of Congress to be preserved in the National Film Registry due to its cultural and historical significance.
