The Brady Bunch: Not So Picture-Perfect Facts

An Innovative Filming Technique

Everyone can recognize the famous Tic-Tac-Toe arrangement of the Bradys. The opening sequence and the show’s theme song are iconic. What you might not know is that it was made with a filming technique created by Canadian director Christopher Chapman. The effect is called “the multi-dynamic image technique,” but it is now known as the “Brady Bunch Effect.”

The technique is exactly what you see in the opening sequence: various images moving around. However, the Brady Bunch wasn’t the first time it was used. The “Brady Bunch Effect” was first featured in the Chapman’s 1967 film, A Place to Stand.
