A Giant Among Giants

Massive weaponry was on display in the Civil war, including this 200-pounder goliath of a gun. This and similar other guns were placed to defend Fort Wagner. Fort Wagner is infamous for being the battle setting of the historical 54th Massachusetts regiment, the first colored unit of the US Army.

Union soldiers were successful in breaching the walls of the Fort during the second assault, but they were outdone when furious hand-to-hand combat ensued, resulting in their retreat. It was not until 1863 when heavy union bombarding leads to the Confederates soldiers retreating from the fort.
