The civil war was sparked by the incidents at Fort Sumter in 1861. Fort Sumter, situated near South Carolina, experienced heavy bombardment, which is evident from the rubble in the photo. The first state to secede from the Union was also South Carolina, seceding six months before the Civil war even began.

Situations were tense during that time, and both sides of the table were waiting for the other side’s move. This came as a result of the surrender of Fort Sumter, as its supplies had run low, and it faced intense opposition from the confederates, who moved fast against President Lincoln’s order of the Fort being reinforced.
