General John Sedgewick, pictured in the middle, was considered one of Union’s most valuable asset. He was shot in the face by long-range rifle fire, and General Ulysses S. Grant would consider his loss greater than the loss of an entire division of troops.
He, however, faced his ultimate demise in a rather embarrassing way. When his division was struck by heavy long-range rifle fire, he saw his men running for cover, and on this, he remarked, “Stand up. They couldn’t shoot an elephant from this distance!” Right after saying that, he was the target of a fatal bullet through the skull.
