Edward’s lavish world was depicted as being very new to the less-cultured Vivian Ward, who had never been to fancy places before. So when she joined him in dining out, the escargots had her befuddled. Vivian, an escargot virgin, tried eating from the dish, but the slippery snail slipped out of her hands and was expertly caught by the waiter standing by their table.

He quickly covered up for her and said, “It happens all the time.” Gary Marshall, who also directed Disney’s The Princess Diaries many years later, recreated this same scene in the other movie. So when Mia Thermopolis, a princess in training, breaks a champagne glass, the same waiter – now older – says to her, “It happens all the time.”
