Julia Roberts Volunteers at a Clinic
Julia Roberts was truly dedicated to playing out her part in the movie well. So to research the role of Vivian, Julia Roberts volunteered at a Los Angeles clinic for a week. Gary Marshall’s wife worked there as a nurse and offered Julia the chance to drop by and talk to the patients.

Barbara Marshall said, “Garry would never visit me at the clinic because he was a hypochondriac and afraid of getting a disease. But he asked if Julia could come and talk to some of the patients.” And Julia did go, spending time with the patients and learning more about what her character was supposed to be like. And it paid off because Roberts made a very convincing Vivian.
