Awards Left, Right and Center

Although it was uncommon for a rom-com to be nominated for or to win prestigious awards, Pretty Woman beat the odds. Julia Roberts also ended up beating Meryl Streep, Demi Moore, Mia Farrow, and Andie MacDowell to bag the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.

Roberts was still an up and coming actress, relatively new to the industry, so it was a big surprise when the movie for which she was the leading lady took home so many nominations and awards. This wasn’t Julia Roberts’ first award, though; the previous year, she had taken home the Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actress for Steel Magnolias.
