They Take Shaming to Another Level
One of the main methods the Amish people use to keep a pacifist life is excommunication. When someone from the Amish community does something that goes against their religious code, something called “Meidung” takes place.
The Meidung is a type of shunning, used as a means of shaming the individual. The shunning can be temporary or permanent (depending on the person and the act). Until the person returns, the community will not eat with, sleep with, or accept gifts from the shunned individual.
