A Missing World War II Submarine Was Found: The U.S.S. Grayback

Radio Message Number Two

However, that wasn’t the only message they received. The next day, on February 25th, 1944, the guys who were on the Grayback sent another radio message. This message also stated two victories and the crew claimed they ruined the Asama Maru, a Japanese submarine that was mainly used as a troop carrier. That’s pretty impressive.

They went on to say that they also sunk the Napo Maru tanker. Unfortunately, after that report, no more victorious messages went through. That’s because they only had two torpedoes and had to go to Midway Atoll in the North Pacific to re-supply. No one realized that message would be the last, nor that it would lead to a decade-long mystery.
