The Delta House was Inspired by the Writer’s Time at Dartmouth Fraternity
… Which was described as a ‘vomiting cult.’
Yes, to be referred to as a vomiting cult is a rather unfortunate term. But when creating the script for ‘Animal House,’ the writers found themselves drawing on their own college experiences in fraternities. Writer Chris Miller’s stories about Alpha Delta Phi at Dartmouth were the craziest. So naturally, they chose that those particular stories would serve as the inspiration for their new comedy.
Belushi’s Bluto character was inspired by a real guy who poured mustard on his head and literally bit girls while crawling around on the dance floor. Miller’s name at his frat was “Pinto,” and the name made its way into the film, but most of the vomiting stories were kept out.
