Coming Out of His Shell
He was an only child until the age of 11, when his parents, James and Nancy, adopted a baby girl. Rogers came out of his shell by the time he hit high school. And it was in college that he found his truth.
Fred went to college, and during his senior year, he visited his parents back home and was awed by their newest home addition: a television set. He immediately decided that he wanted to be a part of the medium.
“ When I first saw children’s television, I thought it was perfectly horrible, ” Rogers later told Pittsburgh Magazine. “ And I thought there was some way of using this fabulous medium to be of nurture to those who would watch and listen .”
