His Childhood Wasn’t Picture Perfect
Fred McFeely Rogers was born in Pennsylvania in on March 20, 1928, and had a lonely childhood. According to Benjamin Wagner (who directed the 2010 documentary ‘Mister Rogers & Me’), Rogers was overweight and shy as a kid. He was often taunted by others when he walked home from school.
“ I used to cry to myself when I was alone ,” Rogers later recalled. “ And I would cry through my fingers and makeup songs on the piano. ” It was these experiences that led Rogers to look under the surface of everyone he later met to find what he called the “essential invisible” within them.
