36. Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah
“Maybe there’s a God above / But all I’ve ever learned from love / Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya”
Hallelujah was written by Leonard Cohen but the cover is by Jeff Buckle. And his version of the song is more mournful than the Cohen’s.
The song is about love that has gone stale. Cohen, in his lyrics, used a lot of religious imagery, with references to notorious women in the bible. Cohen explained: “Hallelujah is a Hebrew word which means ‘Glory to the Lord.’ The song explains that many kinds of Hallelujahs do exist. I say: All the perfect and broken Hallelujahs have an equal value. It’s a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in some formal religious way but with enthusiasm, with emotion.”
