Maudie Hopkins was the last widow of a civil war vet who died in 2008 at the age of 93. This was the same year that Barack Obama won the presidential election.
Maudie Hopkins married Civil War veteran William M. Cantrell in 1934, back when she was only 19. She said that poverty drove her to marry the former soldier that was 86 at the time.
