He Loved Animals

Born in England, Colebourn always loved animals. At the age of 18, he immigrated to Canada to study veterinary surgery. And after graduating from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1911, Colebourn decided to settle in a prairie boomtown of Winnipeg. He took a job with the Department of Agriculture. This was right on the brink of the First World War.

Days after the declaration of World War I, the young veterinary officer was among the first to enlist and leave Winnipeg for the military training camp in Quebec. It was on this trip to Quebec that they stopped in the lumber town of White River in Ontario. As soon as Colebourn saw the cub, he scooped him up and held him in his arms.

His life was about to change forever…
