The Real-Life Boy and Bear Behind Winnie the Pooh

A Soldier and a Bear

Bells were ringing, and brakes were squealing as a trainload of men in military uniforms pulled into a small lumber town in Ontario, Canada, on August 24, 1914. They were in dire need of fresh air and a good stretch after a long day of being on the train. As Lieutenant Harry Colebourn went down the steps of the railcar onto the station’s platform, something caught his eye.

He saw a black bear cub (who was no more than seven months old) attached to a leash that was held by a trapper. Apparently, the bear’s owner was hoping to attract the attention of a willing buyer. As it turns out, the 27-year-old Canadian soldier, was just the customer this bear trapper was looking for.
