The Lady in Red
Vivian’s iconic red dress that she wore to the opera almost wasn’t red. The studio, producers, and costume designer debated over whether Vivian should wear the red dress or the black one. And while black would have been a more graceful choice, it wouldn’t have made quite the striking impression that red did.

The costume designer, Marilyn Vance-Straker, won the debate after a few screen tests were run, and it was made obvious that red, in fact, showed up better on the camera and in real life, enhancing Vivian’s personality on the screen as a lady of the night. That’s why Roberts was given red, and we’re so very glad that she was because the stunning color suited her character as well as her looks.
