As mentioned before, Richard Gere was initially skeptical about signing on for the role of Edward Lewis, but apart from the vibrant personality of Julia Roberts, which made him say yes, there was another thing that changed his mind. In 1986, he was offered the role of Gordon Gekko, the corporate raider, in the movie called Wall Street.

Richard Gere had turned down the role, and it was given to Michael Douglas instead. Douglas then went on to win an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the film. Richard probably greatly regretted turning down the film and must have decided against turning down this role as well. And his decision paid off. The movie was a hit, and so was his character.
