Nichelle Nichols Wanted Out
Nichelle Nichols’ Uhura was another character who didn’t have much to do in ‘The Original Series.’ She mostly sat and picked up communication waves. According to Nichols, she was tempted to leave the show to explore better roles.

But then one night at a party, she encountered Martin Luther King, Jr., and his wife Coretta absolutely gleaming at seeing her. They were huge fans of Star Trek and told her it was one of the few shows they encouraged their kids to watch. Nichols was heartened by this and decided to stay on. Obviously!
