Dorothy Fontana Used a Pen-Name
DC Fontana is a famous name in the Trek world. She wrote classic episodes of The Original Series and script-doctored many others in her 50+ year writing career. But NBC wasn’t thrilled about having a female writer on Star Trek.
The reason isn’t clear. They either felt she wouldn’t be taken seriously or just doubted her abilities. But Roddenberry was a longtime friend of hers, and he fought for her. She ended up having to use the pen-name DC Fontana because it sounded male. Star Trek earned her such success that DC was the name she used in most of her work ever since.
