‘DS9’ Was Always Undermined
Rick Berman oversaw the franchise after Gene Roddenberry’s illness and passing and guided it through its most successful years. But he was also responsible for the franchise’s decline. Berman didn’t take many risks, and Deep Space Nine was the epitome of risk.
According to the producers and cast, Berman didn’t like the series. Over the years, budgets were cut, storylines were obstructed or outright refused. An attempt at a ‘DS9’ film was shot down. Berman opposed the Dominion War plot, claiming it was too dark. Ira Behr responded, saying, “Wars are f*****g dark!”
