Despite being a gorgeous beauty icon, Marilyn wasn’t as happy and confident as she appeared. Her grandmother committed suicide when Marilyn’s mother, Glady was only seven. Glady also suffered from mental issues, which forced her to give up raising her daughter.

Mental disorders were considered taboo at the time, and Marilyn was encouraged to avoid mentioning her mother, who had been diagnosed with paranoid Schizophrenia. Not growing up in a steady home can be very traumatic for a child. In addition to the genetic aspect, growing up in foster care may have contributed to her lack of self-confidence, low self-esteem, and depression.
