He Lived Through USS Yorktown’s Sinking to Tell His Story

The Captain said to his crew that he was sorry – that there would be no liberty cards for anybody. All hands were needed to get the ship repaired, resupplied, and ready to sail again in time. In time for what, though? He didn’t say. All the men knew was that it was important. It was a real blow – for both the captain and his crew.

There was plenty of grumbling and moaning, including Daves’ himself. But Daves never heard anyone blame the captain; they just cursed the war itself. Waiting for them, ashore were a mob of workers. There were hundreds of guys with toolboxes who swarmed aboard the carrier the minute they pulled into the dock. The next few days were all hammers and saws…
