The Powerful Desire to Be Educated
This is one of the most powerful photos ever taken and relays an important chapter in American history. Dorothy Counts was the first black student to be integrated into a previously all-white school in 1957.
You can only imagine the tension and remarks that the students must have taunted her with. But Dorothy remained cool, calm, and collected despite the circumstances. She later said that her strong faith in God is what kept her going.
