City Transformations: How do Cities Change from Past to Present

Today the official name of the city is the Seoul Special Metropolitan City, and as of January 2017, the population of Seoul stands at 10,197,604 residents making it the 5th most populous city in the world! Overall, South Korea has a population of 51 million people. That means that this city has 20% of South Korea’s population alone living there. Seoul Capital Area contains five UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Changdeok Palace, Hwaseong Fortress, Jongmyo Shrine, Namhansanseong and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty.

Seoul might still be an ancient city, but since the Korean War, the citizens have built about two dozen bridges across the Han River, a river that connects the city. Some of these bridges are railroad bridges which do help roads being overcrowded by cars with one person in each. However, there are so many people living there that it is still very crowded and the traffic jams barely end.
