Celebrity Feuds: When Hollywood is Like One Big High School

Madonna vs. Elton John

This musical icon feud began in 2002 when Sir Elton John bashed Madonna’s song for the James Bond movie Die Another Day. He said it was “the worst Bond theme ever.” Then in 2004, John ridiculed her during the 2004 Q Awards in London. When Madonna was nominated in the best live act category, John said, “Since when has lip-synching been live? Anyone who lip-synchs in public on stage when you pay 75 pounds to see them should be shot. Thank you very much.” He later apologized.

In 2005, Elton and his partner David Furnish tried to get Madonna to perform at their bachelor party, but she declined. He reportedly told a party guest: “Madonna, the miserable cow, wouldn’t do it.” In response, Madonna’s spokeswoman said, “Madonna wishes Elton all the best, and hopes married life will make him a happier person.”
