David Letterman vs. Jay Leno

When Johnny Carson announced that he was leaving NBC’s “The Tonight Show” in 1992, everyone figured the obvious replacement would be David Letterman. But NBC gave the show to Jay Leno instead. There was bad blood after Letterman delivered a backhanded compliment that Leno was both one of the funniest and most insecure people he knew. After many years, the two recently hinted at a possible truce.

Letterman is hardly cuddly. He almost never gives interviews and is famously prickly both on-camera and off. In his early years on his show, he struggled to hide his dislike for guests like Cher. But this made his fans love him even more. They saw him as genuine. That was why he was forgiven after an embarrassing sex scandal with female staffers.
