The Famous ‘Battle of the Sexes’ of 1973

This famous tennis match was held at the Huston Astrodome in 1973. The match was between Bobby Riggs against Billie Jean who was then 55 and 29 years old respectively. The 29-year-old King won the match after he bet her opponent three sets to none.

Due to the massive attention attracted to the match, the organizing committee sort to pick top ranking players who had already established themselves in the world of tennis. Riggs had just retired from professional tennis but still claimed that he would beat any female player who was top of the table. King was later approached by a promoter who awarded her some good cash to accept the challenge. The winner would be awarded $100,000 approximated to be $551,000 in today’s currency.
