Area 51: The Facts, the Myths, and the Controversy

Area 51 is a Nickname

In the middle of the Nevada desert, there’s an unmarked road that leads to the front gate of what is commonly known as Area 51. It’s a highly classified United States Air Force facility in the Nevada Test and Training Range. Area 51 is actually a nickname. The facility is officially called Homey Airport or Groom Lake (named after the salt flatlands next to its airfield).

Here’s the thing: the details of the operations that go on there aren’t publicly known. And people have generally come to believe that if something is kept discreet, it’s because they’re hiding something! The facility claims that it’s an open training range. Chances are, it’s used for the development and testing of experimental aircraft and weapons systems. But many Americans believe it’s where the government is keeping aliens and their UFOs.
