Born and Raised in Pittsburgh
Andy Warhol is now known for being an artist, film director, producer, and a leading figure in Pop Art, a visual art movement. But where did he come from? Warhol was born on August 6th, 1928, in Pittsburgh to a pair of immigrants from Slovakia. His parents’ names were Julia and Ondrej Warhola. Ondrej ended up changing his name to Andrew in order to sound more American after he immigrated.
His father moved to the United States in 1914 without his mother, who joined him later on in 1921 after Warhol’s grandparents passed away. He has two brothers: Pavol and Jan. You might even know his nephew, Pavol’s son, James Warhola. He is an artist who has done illustrations for dozens of children’s books. Fun fact: he also illustrated articles and covers for Mad Magazine.
