Screen chameleon Johnny Depp had no intention of becoming an actor. All this would change when he went with his pal to an audition for A Nightmare on Elm Street . His buddy didn’t make it, but Director Wes Craven noticed Depp hanging around the set and requested him to audition.

Johnny made the cut and played Glen, the lead’s boyfriend that Freddy Krueger kills by sucking him into a mattress. That horrifying scene led to more small acting roles, played largely in part by the encouragement of his buddy Nicholas Cage. He shot to stardom when he was cast as Tommy Hanson in the popular TV series 21 Jumpstreet. Depp is known for collaborating with director Tim Burton in memorable films like Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow. But perhaps Depp is best known and loved for playing Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise.
