An Inspirational Battle
For those who don’t know, Redford had polio when he was a young child. While directing a portion of the 6-part documentary series, ‘Cathedrals of Culture,’ in 2014, Redford chose to focus on the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, California. Why? Redford explained why he chose the revolutionary institute when he was in an interview with the British newspaper “The Express.”
He said how he wanted to pay respects to its namesake, Jonas Salk, who had been an eminent scientist; one that developed the world’s first polio vaccine. Redford also shared how he has a personal connection to the crippling and potentially fatal disease considering he endured a (mild) battle with polio when he was a young boy.
