40 Facts for the 40th Anniversary of Airplane!

Three Directors, One Film

The fact that the movie was made by Abrahams and the Zuckers caused a legal issue when it came to credits. The Directors Guild of America (DGA) had ruled that all three of them couldn’t be credited for directing one movie. They also said that they weren’t allowed to credit themselves under the fictitious name of “Abrahams N. Zuckers.”

A DGA representative came on set to make sure that only Jerry Zucker was the one who spoke to the actors, making him the official director. What the rep saw was Jerry next to the camera, who would go to a trailer where the other two were watching the video feed. He would then go back to the actors to give them notes. A DGA executive board eventually decided to grant all three of them one-time rights to share the credit.
