1920 vs. 2020: What’s Changed (and What Hasn’t) After 100 Years

The Price of Coca-Cola

6.5-oz glass bottle of Coke in 1920: $0.05

Coke has been around since 1886, and from then up until 1959, the price of a 6.5-oz glass or bottle was fixed at 5 cents or one nickel. In today’s currency, 5 cents equals 64 cents. Coca-Cola was able to keep this price for a few reasons, including bottling contracts they signed in 1899, advertising, vending machine technology, and a low rate of inflation.

12-oz glass bottle of Coke today: $1.49

The drink’s price was able to remain the same for over 70 years, which is significant considering the events that occurred: World War I, the founding of Pepsi, the Prohibition, changing taxes, World War II, etc. Today, a 12-oz glass bottle costs $1.49 on average. Keep in mind that it’s twice the size of those from 100 years ago.
