Showtime at the Apollo! NASA’s Moon Missions Photographed

Apollo 4 (The “All-Up” Test)

The Apollo 4 mission lifted at 7:00 a.m. EST on November 9, 1967. The launch created one of the loudest human-made sounds ever, even rattling the windows at the Launch Control Center and Press Site three miles away. This mission was a major milestone in NASA’s efforts to bring humans on the moon.

Apollo 4 was the first-ever launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The giant Saturn V rocket was unmanned, and it was referred to as the first “all-up” test of the three-stage Saturn V rocket, which meant that all stages were functioning.

Apollo 4’s official description was: “Unmanned flights of launch vehicles and the CSM, to demonstrate the adequacy of their design and to certify safety for men.”
