Welcome to the Wonderful World of Dr. Seuss: The Man Behind the Legend

Japan Influenced One of His Books

Dr. Seuss was inspired to write a book when he was on a trip to Japan in 1953. His trip was something of a muse that motivated him to make his picture book “Horton Hears a Who,” which, according to his dedication, might be about his friend Mitsugi Nakamura.

According to the Harvard Political Review, Geisel wrote that the book was dedicated to his “Great Friend, Mitsugi Nakamura of Kyoto, Japan.” Nakamura was the dean of Doshisha University in Kyoto. Without Nakamura’s influence, the project wouldn’t have come to fruition.
