Welcome to the Wonderful World of Dr. Seuss: The Man Behind the Legend

We’ve Been Pronouncing “Seuss” Wrong

Listen, guys, we’ve been saying it wrong this whole time. It’s not pronounced “Soose.” As Ted Geisel and his family, who immigrated to the US from Bavaria, pronounce the name as “Zoice.” Seuss was the maiden name of Geisel’s mother, Henrietta. In its traditional pronunciation, the name Seuss rhymes with the word “voice.”

The “Dr. Seuss” nickname evolved from a pseudonym that Geisel created at Dartmouth College, his undergraduate alma mater. And later, as the author’s fame grew, people started to mispronounce it. Geisel’s friend, Alexander Liang, wrote a poem: “You’re wrong as the deuce / And you shouldn’t rejoice / If you’re calling him Seuss / He pronounces it Soice.”
