Welcome to the Wonderful World of Dr. Seuss: The Man Behind the Legend

A Line Was Cut Out from “The Lorax”

The original version of “The Lorax” was first published in 1971; a time when phosphorous pollution had set off massive algal blooms and dead fish were washing up on the shore in scary numbers. In early editions of the book, the Lorax tells the villainous Once-ler, “ I hear things are just as bad up in Lake Erie .”

14 years after the book was released, the Ohio Sea Grant Program wrote to Geisel saying how much the conditions have improved and begged him to take the line out of his book. Geisel agreed, and the line would be taken out in future editions.
