The Life of Hollywood’s Leading Man: Clark Gable

Business with Pleasure

Like many actors, at the beginning of his career, Gable had an acting coach. Her name was Josephine Dillon, and she was a theater manager in Portland. Dillon helped Gable become the leading man he turned into. She paid for him to have teeth fixed, hair styled and helped him get into shape.

Other than acting, she also taught Gable how to control his posture and speech. She helped him lower his naturally high-pitched voice and make the expressions on his face more convincing. In 1924, Dillon finally believed he was ready, and the two went to Hollywood. She was his manager and then became his wife, even though she was 17 years older than him.
