The Life of America’s Most Notorious Outlaw: Jesse James

Young Gangster

It all started back in 1862 when William Quantrill formed a group of guerilla fighters. Jesse joined the gang, and some of the other members included his brother Frank, and Cole and Robert Younger. In addition to attacking the Union troops, the gang also raided mail coaches, harassed the anti-confederate communities, and killed Abraham Lincoln supporters.

The Quantrill raiders attacked the town of Lawrence in 1863. At the time, this was considered one of the most terrible crimes of the Civil War. They killed at least 150 people there and burned down 180 buildings. For the next year, Frank brought the Quantrill raiders to Texas, and then he joined Taylor’s group with his brother Jesse. Jesse was just 16-years old at the time.
