The Gumm Sisters
Judy Garland was the epitome of the tragic child star. Her parents were living in Grand Rapids to run their movie theater. The theater featured some of the most sensational and entertaining acts of the time. They put their children into the industry at a young age. She took the stage at age two and sang Jingle Bells for her first public performance with her two older sisters, Virginia and Mary Jane.
The sisters then formed a group and performed as The Gumm Sisters. The Gumm family moved to California in 1926, where Judy and her sisters studied dancing and acting. Their mother, Ethel, arranged multiple gigs for them, and she acted as their agent and manager. By the late 1920s, the Gumm sisters were featured in a few short films.
